Our approach to medicine and healing

At InHealthRVA, we’re Functional and Integrative Medicine specialists. Here’s what that means:

  1. We take a systemic approach to healing. Your body is a complex, interdependent, miraculous machine. While conventional medicine breaks your body up into different sections, each treated by a different specialist such as a primary-care physician, endocrinologist, or immunologist, Functional Medicine recognizes that no part of the body is isolated from the functioning of its other parts. For example, your hormones affect how your immune system functions, which affects how your brain functions. In other words, everything is connected—and wellness happens when we help all aspects of your body work together smoothly.

  2. We tackle the root causes of disease. Diagnoses in conventional medicine are more often descriptive than diagnostic. For example, arthritis simply means “joint inflammation,” and treatment might involve trying to suppress inflammation. Our Functional Medicine approach is to ask: why is there inflammation? Through advanced laboratory testing and a detailed and expert analysis of your life history, we can understand what’s going on in your body and how stop the root causes of inflammation and other health issues.

  3. We incorporate the best practices from multiple healing traditions. Functional Medicine is all about understanding the complexity of the human body and experience and meeting you wherever you are in your individual health journey. At InHealthRVA, we incorporate advanced Functional Medicine testing and techniques, as well as recommend other modalities to support multiple areas of your health. These may include acupuncture, physical therapy, massage therapy, lifestyle and nutritional counseling, herbs, supplements, and pharmaceuticals.

  4. We know that you are unique. Good healthcare is not one-size-fits-all. Your current health circumstances are the result of both your genetics, epigenetics, personal and environmental life history. We honor that and work with you to develop an individualized healing plan and work at a pace that is right for you.

The Functional Medicine process

The many factors that influence your health are like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. We gather up as many of those pieces as possible so that we can understand the overall picture.

The first step to doing so is spending time sitting and really listening to you. Our initial client appointments are longer than you may be used to—typically 90 minutes. This helps us to begin to understand where you're coming from and how your life’s journey has led to what you’re going through today.

Factors we consider include:

  • Early childhood

  • Environmental Exposures

  • Diet

  • Stress

  • Sleep

  • Exercise

  • Infections

  • Gut microbiome

  • Nutrients

  • Energy production

  • Oxidative stress

  • Inflammation

Next, we use lab tests to take a deep dive into your current state of health. These include both advanced interpretations of conventional labs, as well as specialized Functional Medicine labs.

In other words, we take a lot into account! Then, we work with you to develop a healing plan that addresses all of these factors in a way that works for you.

Your healing journey is your own, but we are here to be your expert consultants—and will provide you with astute clinical analysis and guidance along the way.
