Treating Underlying Health Conditions Would Decrease the Health and Death Toll of COVID-19

Former CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden “is widely regarded as one of the premier public health experts in the world and has a wealth of experience in public health and science..." He has come out publicly calling for better treatment of the underlying health conditions that lead to significantly higher negative consequences, including death, from COVID-19.

By now, we all know that the majority of severe cases of COVID are in those with underlying health conditions (73%). These underlying conditions include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, smoking and related issues to these conditions including lung, liver, kidney and metabolic disease. It is likely the pre-existing inflammation and oxidative stress these conditions create is what leads to the extreme inflammation that has such deadly consequences for COVID-19 infections.

Knowing this gives us a powerful weapon against COVID-19 in that we, individually and as a society, can significantly reduce the impact of COVID-19 (and future pandemics) by focusing on preventative and wellness medicine. Besides advanced age, most of the underlying conditions that predispose a person to severe COVID-19 symptoms are greatly impacted by lifestyle and nutrition.

Insuring optimal wellness through basic preventative and wellness medicine such as nutrition, lifestyle, hormone and gut microbiome health could go a long way to preventing the severe effects not only of COVID-19, but of all major causes of death and decreased quality of life as we age.
